US tightens rules on biofuels

Logging and burning a forest is as ‘carbon neutral’ as emptying a water reservoir is ‘water-saving’.

Hoorah—an environment group in the US has just succeeded in overturning the law that exempts the burning of forest trees or ‘biomass’ as pollution. The court decided “There is no statutory basis for exempting biogenic carbon dioxide”. This is a good move in the right direction—and must also put the wind up the forest burning/ethanol industries and plans everywhere—including here in Oz! It means, they could have to pay for the carbon pollution they create.

Of course the logging industry is claiming cutting down and burning forests in power furnaces is ‘carbon-neutral’. Obliterating a forest is as ‘carbon neutral’ as emptying a water reservoir is ‘water-saving’.
