The State Liberals’ forest policy
The Victorian Liberals have begun to unveil their forest policy. And so far so good. Smaller landowners in rural areas would be offered cash incentives to grow firewood and sawlog crops on their blocks. This would suit many small back-to-the-landers, reduce the impact of large scale plantations on communities and water catchments and lead to better managed tree crops. The Libs hope to see 3,000 ha of trees planted per year under this scheme with landowners being paid between $600 and $1,000 a hectare, for 10 hectares of plantings.
We look forward to hearing the rest of their policy over the coming months.
