Koala injuries and deaths certified as eco-friendly!
Thousands of Koalas have been knowingly killed and maimed in harvesting machines and shredders by a plantation company for years. This has highlighted the deaths and horrific injuries of thousands of native animals that go on under the label of certified environmentally-friendly products, in both plantations and native forests.
Koalas have highlighted just the tip of the iceberg on this issue.
Australian Bluegum Plantations (ABP) which was the company exposed for killing thousands of koalas was certified as environmentally friendly for years. The Manager of ABP, Tony Price was also the Chair of this same certifying group, the Forest Stewardship Council (FSC). He stood down when the story was publicised, the FSC label was stripped from his company’s timber, but he now refuses to resign from the FSC Board. This is an outrageous show of conflict of interest verging on corruption. Who will ever be able to trust this FSC label again.
After an international campaign against ABP which also exposed the FSC, this complaint was acted on. But we still must wonder how such appallingly destructive operations can be given FSC in the first place.
