Gunns – the first pulpmill in the world to have healthy effluent?
Despite the discovery that Bass Strait’s water flushes once every six months, Gunns is still assuring us it is safe to release millions of litres of their pulp mill effluent into the ocean.
Gunns’ chairman, John Gay, says the effluent is not a pollutant.
“The area has got a water flow fast enough and strong enough to make sure that any water going into Bass Strait doesn’t have any effect on anything in Bass Strait at all,” he said, cryptically, hoping we wouldn’t care about the effluent once it was out of sight. Despite kraft mills being notoriously polluting, discharging toxic chlorine and dioxins among other nasties, he said their kraft mill would only discharge coloured water and salt.
