To compliment today's launch of the Brumby government's Icon Walks for East Gippsland, the local conservation group, Environment East Gippsland is also launching the opening of their Valley of the Giants walk at the controversial Brown Mountain old growth forest. The group has invited Minister Jacinta Allen to attend and help launch this walk while she is in East Gippsland today.
"This walk was promised for funding in 2006 by the ALP but which has since been partly clearfelled and burnt by VicForests " said Jill Redwood from EEG. "Our members, locals and supporters have put this walk in over the past few years with volunteer time and labour. It has attracted hundreds of people since this stand of giant old trees was first discovered 12 years ago."
"We're pleased that the Labor government is now realising that nature based tourism is a big economic winner for East Gippsland. But it's a shame they still allow the destruction of iconic areas of old growth, creating major conflict in the region."
